Readers sound off on slavery’s legacy, resisting ICE and legalized marijuana

Rewrite a story insults our real heroes to us
Fishkill, NY: The United States was not born immaculate! The world of the American revolution and the creation of our constitution were imperfect, and that the generation of courageous and intelligent patriots knew that their experience with the government would always be a battle to create a “more perfect union”. Sin, slavery, slavery, and contrary to the interpretation by President Trump of our history, it was very important. So large, in fact, that he caused civil war, leaving a heritage of racial hatred and legalization of injustice for 100 years later. Trump wants us to learn that “slavery was not so bad”. Yes, donation, it was.
Trump’s orders to the Smithsonian for a “content review” of his historical exhibitions are the code of erasure, whitening and changing what he does not want people to know. For him, the problems of black and brown Americans are not American problems. He ordered the renamed posts and forts of the American army after once again of the Confederate Generals – who were all traitors, and most were also slavers. Trump ordered the Governor of Texas, who voluntarily compared, to pass five districts of the Congress dominated by blacks to stem the losses in the elections of next year. His contempt for African nations is well known, as is his opinion that the protections for blacks found in the law on voting rights are no longer necessary. This is precisely the reason why Texas made it possible to pass these districts.
Trump does not understand that the real heroes, the real patriots of American history, like Frederick Douglass, were those who fought to eliminate evils, and you must recognize evil as evil before you can fight it. Gerald Browne
Stop the bombing
Toronto: Friday, Trump said that he would give Russia and Ukraine for two weeks to accept a meeting. I believe that the most useful thing to accept in a short period of time is that the two parties stop air attacks against civilian populations. Trump should immediately insist on this type of partial ceasefire. Such a measure should be of an indefinite duration, that is to say until the end of hostilities. He should threaten serious sanctions if one or the other of the parties refuses to accept this restriction on their behavior. Even if the two parties had to agree to sit at the same table, we have no idea of the duration of the negotiations. They are very far from their requests. Meanwhile, many civil lives would be lost. Turn and speculation
Bronx: Daily News (and all other printed media or online media) should save time and money and put their resources to use better than to account for the Mess Jeffrey Epstein. Any information from Trump’s DOJ is either a lie or erasure of the truth, or a “Maxwellian” agreement. Why take the trouble to follow a story that the White House made it impossible to believe? Unless another deep throat manifests shadows, Epstein chronicles are simply fiction stories, better ignored by the press and rational readers. Maria Bonsanti
In force
Hartsdale, NY: I’m sorry that the voice Julio Rivera did not follow the news, because the episcopal church was anything but silent on crimes against humanity and illegal ice activities. The episcopal diocese of New York, our bishop, Reverend Matthew F. Heyd, and many of our rectors, including the mother Este Gardner of the episcopal church of St. Bartholomew in White Plains, my church, actively market and protested these crimes. Perhaps Rivera should refer to recent articles in the Daily News and on local television. I imagine that the real question he should have asked where are the other religious representatives? They should indeed all protest actively. Lydia A. Ruth-Gaines
American fascism
Lynbrook, Li: A recent Thursday evening, I finished reading “Auschwitz Lullaby” by Mario Escobar, based on a newspaper found in a Nazi concentration camp. It is a story of the way women have been dealt with. The next day, I opened the Daily News to read the story of Joselyn Chipantiza-Sisalema, 20, owned for 10 days by ice. Its treatment – lack of food, bedding, ability to shower or even brush your teeth – remembers the treatment given to women in Nazi concentration camps. I am 82 years old. I thought we were beyond treating people so inhuman. People who work hard try to improve for themselves and their families are taken by ice – no test, just expelled or sent to places like the Florida concentration camp surrounded by alligators. I have often heard people wondering why the German people did not speak and did not stop Hitler. Why don’t the Americans speak? Barbara Sobey
Help not delivered
Brooklyn: The article Associated Press of August 24 on famine in Gaza omits an extremely important point. 90% of Trucks crossing Gaza in Israel with humanitarian aid do not reach their destinations due to interception and looting by gangs and armed crowds. Why did the UN not send a peacekeeping force to ensure that help is properly delivered? Lawrence Freedland
Does not depend
Manhattan: I really appreciated Theodore A. Moore’s article (“The next Mayor of New York must help a black middle class”, editorial, August 19). Well written with excellent data. But it will not happen. We, the blacks, we must wake up and stop counting on fraudulent politicians to act on our behalf, in particular by attacking economic equality. None of them cares about us, and we must think and do independently of the system, which has not historically worked in our best interest. Holding responsible politicians seems cute, but thinking that they share our interests is beyond delusional. Branch Omar
Offensive sentence
Forest Hills: When Zohran Mamdani has been informed several times that “Globalize The Intifada” was an offensive expression for the Jews, he took three months to accept not to say it, and only after he had to win the support of Jewish business leaders. He did not say once that he now understood that the expression is bad and that it encourages acts of anti -Semitism. He said that he would no longer repeat this offensive expression, but he never said that he condemned him or did not understand that it is offensive. He will not say the expression out loud, however, he always believes it. Jews in New York are crazy to vote for him. Libby Gurgis
Poor performance
Plainview, Li: Watch the way the food play today remind me of the old days when I went to see them at the Ground Polo before the opening of the Shea Stadium on April 17, 1964, with the Pirates of Pittsburgh beat the Mets 4-3 and Casey Stengel as a manager of 1962-1965. I would like to give advice to the owner Steven Cohen. By bringing Yoenis Cespedes, at least he struck circuits if necessary. Regarding Juan Soto, who is paid $ 765 million over 15 years, it turns out that Mr. Merveilleux is not so wonderful. If the dishes continue to play as they are, the only way I would see them is if the coupons on the side of the Borden milk were brought back. Frank Mauceri
Understand the statistics
Chester, NJ: Voice Phil Antico asks how crime statistics can be down when we still read “shots, stabs, aggressive, flights and / or rapes”. It reminds me of people who doubt climate change because they saw a snowstorm. That’s like that, Phil: when the baby boom generation was born, life expectancy was not much more than 65 years. Now he’s almost 80 years old. There are still necrologies in the newspaper, and yes, they count these people. David J. Melvin
Legislative problems
Lindenhurst, Li: someone has finally noticed that smoking cigarettes caused cancer of smokers and others, they therefore logically took measures to control where smoking was authorized, and they spent millions in advertisements to encourage the finish of smoking. In the tables of this, New York State legislature legalizes marijuana. But according to the CDC, marijuana has carcinogens, is addictive (three out of 10 users can develop a cannabis consumption disorder), directly affects the brain function – in particular, the parts of the brain responsible for memory, learning, attention, decision -making, coordination, emotions and reaction time – can make the heart faster and increase blood pressure after use. Now they have started television advertisements to encourage the fight against the treatment of drug addiction. The absolute idiocy of our legislature is out of comparison. Louise Perrotta
