Man dies after being sucked into Long Island MRI machine

A 61 -year -old man in New York died after being sucked in a magnetic resonance imaging machine this week, Nassau County police announced on Friday.

The man wore a large metal chain and entered a room without authorization because the MRI machine, which used a strong magnetic field, worked in a medical office in Westbury on Wednesday afternoon, the police announced.

The metal necklace made him “be trained in the machine that led to a medical episode,” said police about the incident around 4:30 p.m.

He was declared dead by his injuries at 2:36 p.m. Thursday in a hospital, police announced during Friday update.

Safety rules surrounding MRI machines require people to bring nothing metal in a procedural room. Patients are generally required to change clothes before entering and crushing on implants or metal in their bodies.

“Meticulous screening for people and objects entering the MR environment is essential to ensure that nothing enters the magnet area which can become a projectile,” said Food and Drug Administration on its website on safety practices surrounding magnetic resonance.

The MRI office where the incident occurred, Nassau Open MRI, is in Westbury, a community of around 15,000 in the county of Nassau in Long Island.
