Rep. Tom Emmer Calls Out Somali Ties to Massive Fraud – RedState
The situation in Minnesota is becoming more interesting almost by the minute. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison must be suffering from some sweating right now as the Trump administration withdrew federal funds until the whole “suitcases of US currency being transported to Somalia from childless daycares and meal centers that serve no meals” is sorted out.
Now, Republican Rep. Tom Emmer (MN-06), who also serves as House Majority Whip, is rushing to call for the Somali immigrants involved to be sent back to Somalia – even if it requires revoking their citizenship.
Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Emmer on Monday called for the deportation of all Somalis in Minnesota who have committed fraud, including those who are U.S. citizens.
In social media posts and a press release titled “Send Them Home,” Emmer said those who are here illegally should be deported immediately. And he said naturalized citizens should have their U.S. citizenship revoked — even if that would require changing the law.
“Our nation will not tolerate those who take advantage of our charity and refuse to assimilate into our culture,” Emmer said.
He also said that any naturalized Somali American citizen who had undisclosed ties to terrorist organizations or committed marriage fraud during the immigration process should lose their citizenship.
Honestly, that doesn’t seem like an overly harsh response. These are individuals suspected of fraudulently embezzling millions, if not billions, of American taxpayer dollars, much of which returned to Somalia.
A press release from Rep. Emmer’s office states:
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) is calling for the denaturalization of Somalis convicted of defrauding U.S. taxpayers. Whip Emmer’s appeal comes after Assistant U.S. Attorney for Minnesota Joe Thompson estimated that $9 billion was stolen by fraud in Minnesota. About 90 percent of people charged with fraud in Minnesota are of Somali descent.
Whisk the Emmer: “I have three words regarding Somalis who have committed fraud against American taxpayers: send them home. If they are here illegally, deport them immediately; if they are naturalized citizens, revoke their citizenship and expel them promptly thereafter. If we have to change the law to do this, I will do so. Our nation will not tolerate those who take advantage of our charity and refuse to assimilate into our culture. Additionally, if Somalis naturalized people had undisclosed ties to terrorist organizations like Al-Shabaab, I would like to see their citizenship revoked and their asses removed immediately. The same goes for anyone who committed marriage fraud during the immigration process.
It’s something strong, but it’s justified. Evidence is mounting day by day that there was a massive, organized fraud operation, and it must be addressed. And if this “marriage fraud” line isn’t a thinly concealed attack on Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar (MN-05), then no such beast exists.

Rep. Emmer has been criticized for statements he has made about Somalis and other African immigrants in the past, including calling them “some of the most assimilated populations we’ve had.” His district, Minnesota District 6, overlaps with Minneapolis’ Somali/East African community. But, as the saying goes, that was then, this is now, and clearly Rep. Emmer can review new evidence and adjust his views accordingly.
Whatever he said in the past, he is right today. All those people in the country should be returned to Somalia immediately. If we have to go through the process of visa revocation or even denaturalization, we should do it for everyone who is here legally as well.
Rep. Emmer is right. Send them back. Everyone who was involved, everyone who knew. Send them back.
