Report: Vikings initially approached Panthers with underwhelming offer for WR Adam Thielen
The Carolina Panthers may have been willing to let go of their leading receiver, but they weren’t going to do it for almost nothing.
Joe Person of The Athletic went behind the scenes on yesterday’s trade of wideout Adam Thielen, who is now headed back to the Minnesota Vikings after two seasons in Charlotte. Person, in his report from Thursday morning, wrote that the Vikings initiated talks on the 35-year-old pass catcher—and their opening offer was, well, a bit underwhelming:
The Vikings’ initial offer was a sixth-round pick for Thielen and the Panthers’ seventh-round pick, according to a source familiar with the talks. The Panthers countered by asking Minnesota GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah for a third in exchange for Thielen and a fifth, the source said.
Ultimately, the teams landed on an agreement that sent Thielen, a conditional 2026 seventh-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick up north for a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 fourth-round pick. The Vikings will also be on the hook for Thielen’s base salary of $6.25 million and per-game bonus total of $750,000.
Thielen, who played the first nine campaigns of his NFL career in his home state of Minnesota, amassed 1,629 receiving yards and nine touchdowns over 27 games for the Panthers.
