Rockstar Games has confirmed it was hit by third-party data breach
An experienced hacking group claimed to have infiltrated Rockstar Games’ cloud servers, while the game’s publisher confirmed there had been a “third-party data breach.” ShinyHunters, a hacker group linked to data breaches targeting Microsoft, Google, Ticketmaster and others, posted a message on its website with a final warning to Rockstar to “pay or run.” The hack was first spotted by Hackread and the Cybersecurity Guru.
ShinyHunters did not detail what Rockstar data it had access to, adding only that the company had until April 14 to contact us or the group would disclose the compromised information, resulting in “several annoying (digital) issues.” Rockstar Games confirmed the violation to Kotakuexplaining that “a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed as part of a third-party data breach” and that the incident had “no impact on our organization or our players.”
Previously, Rockstar faced a major hack that resulted in a leak including extensive gameplay footage and assets for Grand Theft Auto VI in 2022. Following the hack, one of the members of the Lapsus$ group, aged 18, responsible for the leak, was sentenced to “hospitalization for an indefinite period”.
