Former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper and former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley will face off in the U.S. Senate race.

Both candidates quickly won their primaries as votes began to roll in Tuesday evening.

Whatley has the support of President Donald Trump.

“I’m running this race right now for every family, every community in North Carolina,” Whatley said at a polling station Tuesday in Granite Falls. “We want to create jobs, we want to increase wages, we want to reduce costs and we want to keep our children safe. »

Cooper launches his “Making Things Less Expensive” tour this week, focusing on keeping everyday needs low cost.

“I will be a strong, independent senator who will work with this president when I can and stand up when the people need me to,” Cooper said in his victory speech. “I will always put the people of North Carolina first.”
