Played as best-of-three matches, the name and format “Ashes” was adopted from the popular cricket series of the same title, in which England and Australia also play each other over a series of matches.

Hosting duties usually alternate between the two nations, but the Kangaroos have chosen to visit the northern hemisphere in 2025.

The tests between 1908 and 2003 pitted the now-defunct British team against Australia.

Great Britain won the first Test series of 1908 2–0, with the first match ending in a draw.

It took place at London’s Park Royal – the former home of Queens Park Rangers – in front of a crowd of around 2,000, with the remaining matches being at Newcastle and Birmingham.

Of the 39 Test series played so far, England have won 19 and Australia have won 20 – including the last 13 consecutive series dating from 1970 to 2003.

Great Britain won 24 of the 39 Tests held before 1945, but the tide has since turned in the Kangaroos’ favor.

This will be the first Ashes series that England will not play as Great Britain.

All three Tests will be broadcast live on BBC One, BBC iPlayer and on the BBC Sport website and app.
