Sabrina Ionescu scores 36, Emma Meesseman has 11 in debut as Liberty beat Sun

Uncasville, Connecticut – Sabrina Ionescu scored 36 points, Emma Meesseman collected 11 points in her return to the WNBA and the New York Liberty achieved a sequence of four defeats on Sunday with an 87-78 victory against Connecticut Sun.

Jonquel Jones added 21 points and nine rebounds for The Liberty (18-10), who were starless Breanna Stewart for a fourth right game because of a bruised knee.

Tina Charles collected 17 points and eight rebounds and Annenesah Moorow 16 points and nine rebounds for The Sun (5-22), which gave freedom their worst loss of the season on Friday 78-62. BRIA HARTLEY added 12 points and Marina MABREY 10.

Meesseman, a former MVP of the finals who played for the last time in the League in 2022 before winning the Euroleague female MVP the last three seasons, has done all its damage in the second period. Ionnescu succeeded in 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season to go with her fifth match of 30 points when she finished a point of her career record. It also exceeded 1,000 assists, the third faster to reach this important step.

Ionescu collected 16 points from the first 20 in New York and the Liberty scored the last nine of the first quarter to take a 25-19 lead which they never abandoned. She had 20 and Jones 13 for an advance of 45-38 at halftime.

Meesseman rose on the dashboard with a pair of free throws at the beginning of the third quarter, and scored seven during a wave of 9-2 which saw the Liberty transform a lead of four points in the first advance of two figures of the day, 54-43. New York took an advance of 66-57 in the fourth quarter.
