San Diego State (7-2) returns home hoping to bounce back from a rare 38-6 loss at Hawaii. The Aztecs continue to rely on one of the best defenses in the country, ranking sixth in total defense (262.9 yards per game) and fourth in scoring defense (13.1 points).

SDSU’s ability to contain Boise State’s balanced attack will be key, especially with the Aztecs struggling offensively and converting just 31.9 percent of their third downs, which ranks them 127th nationally.

Boise State (6-3) just received a bye after a surprising 30-7 home loss to Fresno State. The Broncos will be shorthanded, with quarterback Maddux Madsen, receiver Chris Marshall and left guard Jason Steele. Redshirt sophomore Max Cutforth, a former backup, will make his first career start. Boise State still averages 428.0 yards per game, but its red zone defense has been a problem, ranking 119th nationally.

San Diego State’s performance in the 20 could be decisive. The Aztecs score on 88.9% of their red zone trips, while Boise State allows scores on 90.6% of their opponents’ opportunities.

The weather could add another difficulty, with heavy rain forecast as an atmospheric river approaches Southern California. Boise State coach Spencer Danielson said he is focused on preparing for an “absolute fight” against an undefeated SDSU team at home.

Kickoff is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network.
