Trump news at a glance: Schumer says justice department has become a ‘personal attack dog’ after Letitia James indicted | Trump administration

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer accused Donald Trump and his administration of turning the Justice Department into “personal attack dogs against their political enemies” after New York Attorney General Letitia James was indicted on fraud charges in Virginia.
Calling the move “scandalous,” Schumer was among those who called the move Trump’s latest attempt to use the department as a weapon to punish his political rivals.
James first drew Trump’s ire after leading a civil fraud case against the president and his company that resulted in a $500 million fine — a fine recently overturned by an appeals court.
Sen. Adam Schiff said it was “extremely dangerous” to have a Justice Department that does the president’s bidding to target his political enemies.
“But I can tell you,” he added. “Those of us on the president’s enemies list — and it’s a long and growing list — will not be intimidated. We will not be deterred. We will do our job. We will stand up to this president.”
Letitia James criminally charged in Trump’s latest attempt to punish rivals
A federal grand jury indicted New York Attorney General Letitia James on Thursday for bank fraud, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Lindsey Halligan, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, personally presented the case to the grand jury on Thursday, the person said. U.S. attorneys generally do not appear before a grand jury.
“This is nothing more than the president’s continuation of the desperate weaponization of our justice system,” James said in a video statement recorded Thursday. “He’s forcing federal law enforcement to do what he wants, all because I did my job as attorney general of the state of New York.”
