News From the UPS Cargo Plane Crash Keeps Getting Worse As It’s Revealed Engine Fell Off – RedState

Ongoing revelations about the story of the UPS cargo plane crash in Louisville, Kentucky, on Tuesday are not getting any better; in fact, they become more and more tragic and disturbing. The death toll unfortunately stands at 12 dead, including a child, and many injured, some of them serious. All three crew members were pronounced dead.

But another frightening fact emerged from a National Transportation Safety Board briefing: The left engine caught fire and fell from the plane just as it was completing takeoff.

The left wing of a UPS cargo plane caught fire and an engine fell just before the plane crashed and exploded after takeoff from Louisville International Airport, Kentucky, a federal investigator said Wednesday, offering the first official details of a disaster that killed at least 11 people, including three on board.

There was a fire in the left wing of the plane and the engine “came loose” during takeoff Tuesday, said Todd Inman, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board, which is leading the investigation.

Exactly why the wing would detach – every pilot’s worst nightmare – remains under investigation.

Governor Andy Beshear expressed his condolences:

The United Parcel Service also released a statement expressing its sadness.

The statement read, in part:

We are terribly saddened by the accident that occurred this evening in Louisville. Our heartfelt thoughts go out to everyone involved. UPS is committed to ensuring the safety of our employees, customers and the communities we serve. This is especially true in Louisville, home to our airline and thousands of UPS users.

As more videos and photos emerge, the tragic scale of the disaster becomes more and more disturbing (profanity alert):

The black box has been recovered and, although it is heat damaged, it should provide clues as to what went wrong, according to Todd Inman, a member of the NTSB safety committee.

“We are confident that once we deliver them to our laboratory in Washington, we will be able to get a good readout of the applicable data,” Inman said. “And this will be yet another point of information that will really help us understand what happened during this flight point.”

Rep. Morgan McGarvey (KY-03) said the scene looked like a disaster movie:

“The skies over Louisville looked apocalyptic last night. People were scared throughout our community, debris was falling, ash was falling, people were sheltering in place – my family was one of those families,” McGarvey said, adding that the crash site looks like a scene from a “Terminator” movie.

“These are wrecks burned and mutilated beyond anything I’ve ever seen. The smells, the sights, these are things that won’t escape us when we close our eyes tonight,” McGarvey said at a news conference.

The situation is far from over, as doctors at UofL Health in Louisville, Kentucky, describe severe burns, shrapnel and smoke inhalation issues in more than a dozen victims.

A limited number of flights have now resumed, but the regular flow is far from back to normal as only one runway remains and there is a significant delay due to the prolonged closure. RedState will keep you updated on this tragedy as new information emerges.
