Senate Nudges Mullin Closer to DHS Post – RedState

On Sunday afternoon, the Senate voted to close the nomination of Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) for Secretary of Homeland Security. The procedural vote to halt debate on the issue follows a sometimes dramatic confirmation hearing and committee vote, and paves the way for a final confirmation vote Monday evening or Tuesday.
The Senate now takes a procedural vote to end the filibuster on the Mullin/DHS nomination. Requires a simple majority. Confirmation likely tomorrow evening or Tuesday

Only a simple majority was needed here, and the motion passed by a vote of 54 to 37 around 1:45 p.m. Eastern Time.

As noted in the tweet above, Democratic Senators John Fetterman (PA) and Martin Heinrich (NM) joined Republicans in the vote. With the invocation of closure, this triggers the 30 hour debate (unless time is returned). Despite the drama of last week’s hearing, it appears likely that Mullin’s final confirmation vote will pass, and he will soon be sworn in as the next DHS secretary.
Of course, his future agency is still not funded at the moment. The battle over DHS funding continues apace. RedState will keep you posted on this as well.
