Sergio Perez, who will run with the Cadillac F1 team of the 2026 season, especially found the kind of “environment” he was looking for as a team after separating from Red Bull Racing last year.

Cadillac F1 announced yesterday the signature of Perez and Valtteri Bottas, highlighting his preference for experienced drivers who could raise him in his first years in the first class of car sports.

The F1 trip by Perez started in 2011 with Sauber, before moving to forcing India / Racing Point in 2014 and ran with the team until 2020. He then moved to Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen, contributing to the multiple world championship titles.

However, Red Bull’s RB20 would have been affected by equilibrium problems, which added to Perez challenges and led to his departure from the team after the 2024 season. Staying away from F1 for several months, the Mexican driver spoke of the conditions for his return to sport in June and the type of team with which he preferred to run. Newsweek Sports reported his comments:

“I want to come back, but only if the right project arrives, the one where I think I really belong or should be. I do not want to come back at all costs. I am not interested in traveling around the world as a third driver or waiting for an opportunity.”

He added:

“If you look at my years with force India, then with Red Bull – pushing the team’s race forward by race, and finally becoming a winning team – it’s exactly the kind of environment I am looking for.

“A team with this mentality, this unit. For me, it is more important than any trophy or realization: finding a project where the driver feels really motivated.”

Perez revealed in a statement announcing his Cadillac F1 to sign that he could feel “passion and determination” behind the project, a point that probably aligns with his preferences. He said:

“Joining the Cadillac Formula 1 team is an incredibly exciting new chapter in my career. From our first conversations, I could feel the passion and determination of this project. It is an honor to be part of a team of a team that can develop together so that, over time, we will fight in front. Cadillac is a legendary name in American sport, and to help bring such a fantastic business to Formula 1 responsibility, to be taken.

“I am proud to be part of such an ambitious and significant project from the start. I am really happy to be part of such a dynamic range, and together I believe that we can help shape this team in a real competitor, the team of the Americas. We count on the support of the whole continent – and we want to make everyone proud.”
