Siri’s revamp may come via OpenAI or Anthropic, not Apple

Apple could abandon the intention to develop its own internal intermediary model to feed Siri and could be associated with Openai or Anthropic instead.

According to Mark Gurman de Bloomberg, the iPhone manufacturer spoke to the two companies to use Chatgpt or Claude to feed Siri. Apple “asked them to form versions of their models that could operate on Apple’s cloud infrastructure for tests,” said Gurman, citing unnamed sources. The talks are said to be in the early stages, and its efforts to develop its own LLM for Siri, doubled internally LLM Siri, are always active.

Apple’s big Siri update is still not ready for grande hours

If Apple subcontracts an Siri LLM, it would be a major concession of defeat for the company that would have struggled to adapt and improve Siri to current standards. Apple remained on the key at the start of Genai’s boom inaugurated by Chatgpt. And even before Chatgpt, Siri was a bit of a punchline for frustrated users. As one of the pioneers of vocal assistants, Siri had great potential to lead the market with actions activated by the voice. But users are still waiting for the so-called Siri who was promised about a year at WWDC 2024.

Since then, Apple Teams would have struggled to convert the existing SIRI architecture to something that rivals with the vocal modes of Openai, Google and Anthropic. Now, the AI team would be built an LLM from zero, which has led to delays. The siri overhaul has been postponed while Apple tries to offer a plan and aims for a launch of spring 2026. But even it could be in danger, according to this report.
