London – A small plane crashed at London Southend airport, police announced on Sunday.

In a statement, Essex police said it was alerted just before 4 p.m., local time to “the serious incident” of the relatively small airport, about 45 miles east of the capital.

The images published on social networks show a plume of fire and black smoke from the accident site. The plane involved would be 39 feet long.

No details on where the plane was heading or the number of people on board was immediately disclosed.

“We are working with all the emergency services on the scene now and this work will be underway for several hours,” said Essex police.

The local deputy, David Burton-Sampson, urged people to stay away and let the emergency services do their job.

“My thoughts are with all the people involved,” he said.
