Vast Majority Of House Democrats Oppose Legislative Push To Combat Pressing DC Crime Problem

Almost all the Democrats in the Chamber voted against the GOP legislation aimed at reducing juvenile crime on Tuesday evening in the District of Columbia.
The House of Representatives has adopted two bills to retreat to the district policies in the district that the Republicans support encourage recurrences and dissuade local police. The legislative thrust occurs while President Donald Trump threatens to reaffirm federal control over the capital’s police due to the refusal of the mayor of DC Muriel Bowser to cooperate with immigration and customs application (ICE). Only 29 Democrats of the Chamber voted for the legislation (HR 4922) which would allow individuals aged 18 to 24 to be sentenced to adulthood and demand that statistics on crime for young people are public in the national capital.
Likewise, only eight Democratic legislators supported a bill (HR 5140) which would reduce the age at which minors could be tried as an adult for various violent criminal offenses.
The national capital has experienced a marked decline in violent crimes since Trump’s crime repression started on August 11, according to a daily examination of data from the Metropolitan Police Department.
The daily appellant compared a period of two weeks when Trump’s federal takeover of the DC police at the same periods in 2024 and 2023 and found a notable decrease in crime – a drop of 21% in 2024 and a decrease of 33% in 2023.
The mayor of DC, Muriel Bowser, had also publicly admitted that the federal wave of application of the law in the national capital had helped to fight against crime and said that it was grateful for additional support.

The management of the GOP has argued that their legislative efforts to combat DC crime illustrate a clear contrast to the support of democrats to disk policies on crime, such as the deposit without species and the directives of determination of the more generous penalty.
“With these bills, the Republicans empower the agents of the city’s police, fight against the crawling juvenile crimes and make the district courts responsible,” the whip of the majority of the chamber, Tom Emmer, said on a press conference of the GOP. “The American people are fed up with uncontrollable crimes, and our capital should serve as a plan for law and order across the country.”
“By giving the example here, President Trump and the Républicains de la Chambre hold the promise to make America again safe,” added Emmer.
Trump threatened to “federalize” DC on Monday after the opposition of the mayor Muriel Bowser at the Metropolitan Police Service (MPD) cooperating with immigration and customs application (ICE).
“The application of immigration is not what MPD does. And with the end of the emergency, this will not be what MPD does in the future,” said Bowser on a public event on Wusse 9.
GOP legislators have not concluded legislation to extend the President’s 30 -day emergency powers on MPD, citing Bowser’s commitment to work with federal law officials.
