WHAT ARE SNOW EMERGENCIES?

Sheriff’s offices and departments are working with county emergency officials to determine if current weather and road conditions constitute the issuance of a snow emergency level.

Since 1994, county sheriffs have had the authority to issue snow emergencies, following guidelines given by the state.

SNOW EMERGENCY DEFINITIONS

LEVEL 1: Roads are dangerous due to blowing snow and snow drifts. Roads may also be icy. Motorists are urged to drive with caution.

LEVEL 2: Roads are dangerous due to blowing snow and snow drifts. Roads may also be very icy. Only those who consider it necessary to drive should take to the road. Contact your employer to find out if you need to report to work. Motorists should use extreme caution.

LEVEL 3: All roads are closed to non-emergency personnel. No one should drive in these conditions unless absolutely necessary or in a personal emergency. All employees should contact their employer to find out if they are required to report to work. People traveling on the roads may be arrested.
