SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – The weather is breezy and milder tonight through Thursday with temperatures reaching the 30s. Don’t get used to it, though, as arctic air and dangerously cold wind chills will soon return to CNY with heavy snow east of Lake Ontario. When? Find out below…

Latest radar:

Lake snow takes a brief break

Heavy lake effect snow near and just north of Watertown has dissipated for the time being.

However, a Winter Storm Warning will remain in effect for counties east of Lake Ontario until 7 p.m. Friday due to additional heavy snowfall on the lake Thursday afternoon and Friday. A Winter weather advisory is also in place for northern Oneida County until 1 p.m. Thursday.

Milder tonight until Thursday, but…

The cold continues to ease tonight through Thursday with temperatures ranging into the 20s to upper 30s overnight, and 30 degrees through noon Thursday. Unfortunately there is a gusty breeze again (this time from the southwest), so there is a wind chill. However, instead of wind chills below zero, our wind chills Wednesday night and Thursday are between 10 and 20 degrees.

Snow showers late this evening, but no lake effect

After a mostly quiet evening across CNY, a prefrontal trough blows into CNY between about 1 and 5 a.m. with a flurry of snow producing a covering of up to 2 inches for most, but upwards of 4 to 8 inches around Tug Hill.

Return of the arctic/lake cold effect for the end of the week

After a slight warm-up, more seasonal temperatures come Wednesday and Thursday with highs up to 20 degrees reaching near 30 degrees on Wednesday and lows of 30 degrees on Thursday. This warming up is, however, only temporary. Another cold front arrives Thursday afternoon with another layer of an inch of snow possible for most, while over 4 to 8 additional inches are expected east of Lake Ontario.

Behind the cold front, more arctic air builds up and stays with us through the upcoming weekend and beyond. Going into the weekend, highs likely won’t break single digits for the first time in about 4 years in Syracuse!

Along with the return of cold air, there will be another round of significant lake effect snow Thursday night and Friday. Again, the target area appears to be counties east of Lake Ontario, north of Syracuse, but some of the lake snow, in a weakened state, appears to be falling in the Syracuse area Friday evening, early in the weekend. Stay tuned.

Keep an eye out for a Northeast Sunday/Monday…
