Before entering the very end of Something very bad is going to happenlet’s return to the fourth episode of the series, which features a curse that has tormented Rachel’s lineage for years. Rachel hears about it from the creepy older man (Zlatko Burić) who approached her in Episode 1 with the ominous question: “Are you sure it’s him?” Turns out that wasn’t the case. just a scary question. It was also a warning.
According to the man, the curse began a long, long time ago, with his great-great-great-great-grandparents. They were very much in love, but before the wedding the groom died in a hunting accident. The bride begged Death to bring him back, which sparked a delicate bargain. Death agreed to bring back the groom if the bride believed he was her true soul mate. It worked, but at a price: Death cursed all of the bride and groom’s children to find and marry their true soulmates, or pay for it with their lives.
The curse was passed on to the man, who became engaged to his “beloved” Marianne, Rachel’s great-great-great-great-great-grandmother. However, faced with the ultimatum that he had to marry his true soulmate before sunset on his wedding day or die, he left his bride at the altar. After that, the curse was transferred to her lineage: Rachel’s lineage. Now every Harkin must marry their soulmate before sunset on their wedding day. If the person they marry is not their soul mate, they bleed to death. If they run away from marriage before getting married, the curse passes to their bride’s family.

As for the man, he becomes immortal because of his cowardice, and from now on he must bear witness to each Harkin marriage.
Let’s be real: the soulmate aspect of the curse is almost impossible to beat. Even if you believed in the concept of soulmates, the numbers game of finding “the right person” in a world of billions of people is not favorable. Additionally, the curse is basically a self-fulfilling prophecy. Knowing this will make you constantly question your impending marriage, leaving you doubting your love at the altar. And doubt sounds the death knell for any married Harkin.

Armed with this curse, Rachel must decide what to do on her wedding day. If she marries Nicky and he is not her soul mate, she will die. If she leaves, she condemns the Cunningham family to live with the same curse. In theory, she could opt for a secret third option and continue to postpone the wedding indefinitely. However, as the wedding is also meant to serve as a final celebration for Nicky’s dying mother Victoria (Jennifer Jason Leigh), there are outside pressures on Rachel and Nicky to ensure everything stays on track.

To guarantee her survival, Rachel prepares a potion that will transform her into Nicky’s soul mate. She knows it will work because that’s how her great-aunt survived her own marriage, in which most of the other Harkins perished immediately. But at the last minute, Rachel decides not to drink the potion. (Which means she cut off her toe for nothing!) She is sure that Nicky is her soul mate, and she decides to get married.

But in the end, it’s Nicky who gets cold feet. After he and Rachel recite their vows and Rachel puts Nicky’s ring on her finger, he wonders if they should get married. In the past, Rachel has expressed cynicism about the institution of marriage, but Nicky’s brilliant mind decides that the altar is the best place to finally consider those thoughts. Great timing.
Nicky’s break means the sun sets before the wedding ceremony ends. Without marriage, the next wave of curse comes into play and it is transferred to Nicky’s lineage. Here we learn that the curse won’t just affect Nicky’s descendants: it’s retroactive. This means that every Cunningham married to the person who isn’t their soulmate (and let’s face it, that’s pretty much everyone) starts spurting blood and dying. Sorry to tell everyone who was dancing to “I Will Survive” moments before, but they’re actually not surviving.

When the Cunninghams start dropping like flies, Nicky realizes her mistake and rushes a reluctant Rachel to complete the wedding ceremony. While he survives, truly believing Rachel to be his soulmate, Rachel is not so lucky. After seeing Nicky’s cowardice and hearing that he didn’t believe her about the curse, she is not willing to risk her life for him. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what ends up happening once the alliances are put on: Rachel dies, just like her mother did years ago.
But that’s not the end of his story. Death, who lurks throughout the series as a dark POV character, makes one final move. He takes the life of the witness, who had long hoped for liberation from death, and resurrects Rachel. Maybe he recognizes that Rachel was forced into marriage and deserves another chance, or maybe he just wants to inject new blood into the curse.
From now on, Rachel will be the best man at Cunningham’s future weddings. His late predecessor leaves a useful note to inform him of his new role: “Your turn”, written in blood.
He only has one Cunningham left to watch: Jules and Nell’s son, Jude (Sawyer Fraser). Her marriage – if it has one, after witnessing this mess – won’t last for a while yet, so Rachel has all the time in the world to live a free, burden-free life. (She also gives him plenty of warnings to make sure he’s careful who he marries.)
Of course, the thrill of her immortality might eventually fade into the quiet menace of the witness who came before her. But for now, as she climbs into the best man’s old “Just Married” truck and throws her wedding ring out the window, Rachel feels liberated. It turns out that something very bad that she feared turned out to be something good for her.
Something very bad is going to happen is now streaming on Netflix.
