NJ Transit urges commuters to ‘work from home’ during Portal Bridge cutover project

As the Portal Bridge tipping project continues, NJ Transit officials have now asked people to work from home if possible.
For the next month, Amtrak and NJ Transit commuters can expect schedule changes, delays and cancellations.
Hoboken’s mayor said Wednesday will be a real test as more people return to work after a holiday weekend and the numbers will show whether attendance is similar to Tuesday or whether it will increase.
Amtrak transfers rail service from the old Portal Bridge to the new Hackensack River Bridge.
Many trains are rerouted to Hoboken, causing heavy traffic.
Temporary service changes began taking effect on Sunday. There were 27 train cancellations on Sunday, three on Monday and five on Tuesday.
On Sunday, NJ Transit officials apologized for the 27 train cancellations and blamed the scheduling problems on union engineers.
A spokesperson for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trains, which represents NJ Transit engineers, pushed back and said their engineers’ work assignments were assigned at the last minute and included errors.
NJ Transit officials say that while the disruptions are inconvenient at the moment, it will be worth it in the end.
Service changes to be aware of:
Midtown Direct trains on the Morris & Essex (M&E), Gladstone Branch and Montclair-Boonton lines will be diverted to Hoboken on weekdays. Weekend Midtown Direct trains will operate to/from NY Penn Station.
Midtown Direct customers on M&E, Gladstone Branch and Montclair-Boonton Line must purchase tickets/passes with a destination in Hoboken instead of New York.
For Midtown Direct customers with Hoboken as a destination on their tickets/passes, the following options will be available for travel between Hoboken and Midtown Manhattan:
Cross-respect with NY Waterway ferries will be in effect weekdays between the Hoboken Terminal and W. 39th St. in Midtown Manhattan.
Ferry service to Midtown Manhattan will be enhanced during morning and evening peak periods.
Cross honors will be in effect with PATH in Hoboken and 33rd Street only
