Sorry, Mac users, it looks like Face ID is still ‘years away’

Apple revealed the M5 MacBook Pro this week, but fans looking for a major change will have to wait until next year, when the M6 is rumored to arrive with a touchscreen OLED display and a notch-less display. However, an even bigger change could be on the horizon.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is “exploring another Mac change” besides bringing multitouch to the screen. It reports that Apple is working on “a move from Touch ID to Face ID fingerprint scanner” for future Macs. However, he notes that change will still be “years away.”
Mac users have been clamoring for Face ID on a Mac since the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models arrived in 2022. The redesigned MacBook screen featured a notch for the first time to visually mimic the iPhone, even though the MacBook’s notch did not contain the same set of TrueDepth sensors. People naturally assumed the notch meant Face ID would come to the MacBook, but it still hasn’t arrived.
The latest rumor has it that Apple is removing the notch in favor of a hole punch similar to the Dynamic Island, but Gurman’s rumor gives hope that Face ID will one day arrive.
However, as Gurman reports, this feature will still be available years from now. On the PC side, many laptops are available with built-in Windows Hello facial recognition support, but reports indicate that Apple is still working on making Face ID sensors thin enough to fit on the MacBook’s screen.
