The Writing on the Wall for Chuck Schumer Gets Worse After Shutdown Deal – RedState

As RedState reported, a handful of Democrats in the U.S. Senate finally did the right thing Monday night in getting an amended continuing resolution across the finish line in the upper chamber, sending the measure back to the House for consideration.
The lead-up to the beginning of the end of the Schumer Shutdown was perhaps even more fascinating to watch, with Democrats in both the House and Senate ripping not just into the defecting senators but also into Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) for his inability to hold his caucus together amid the longest shutdown in U.S. history.
“Senator Schumer is no longer effective and should be replaced,” Rep. Ro Khanna (CA-17) tweeted. “If you can’t lead the fight to stop healthcare premiums from skyrocketing for Americans, what will you fight for?” Rep. Seth Moulton (MA-06), who is challenging longtime Democrat Sen. Ed Markey in 2026, agreed, saying “everywhere I go, people say there’s a leadership vacuum in the Democratic Party.”

But where this deal hurts Schumer the most is not just nationally but in his own backyard, where his approval rating among New York Democrats is cratering, as explained by CNN senior data analyst Harry Enten:
Least popular Dem Senate leader [among Democrats nationwide] ever. I looked at all of the polls going all the way back since 1985. The one who has the lowest rating among Democrats is, in fact, Chuck Schumer. Look at this. He’s underwater with Democrats, his own party. He’s underwater. He’s at minus four points. That makes him the least popular guy for a Dem Senate leader going all the way back since the mid-1980s at least.
[…]You see this opening slide here and you see, of course, that Chuck Schumer is underwater with Democrats nationally. But, of course, the ultimate way to get Chuck Schumer out of office is to beat him in New York state.
So, how do New York state Democrats feel about Chuck Schumer? And take a look here, the net favorable among New York Democrats: Chuck Schumer is above water with the Democrats in his home state, but just by 16 points. Look at Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez running way ahead [at 46 points]. If she decides to challenge Chuck Schumer come 2028, she’s got a real leg up on the competition. I dare say at this point she would be the favorite to beat him, which would be something that would just blow my mind, even just a few years ago, given that Chuck Schumer, of course, is a New York-born-bred type of guy.
Watch:
Polls show Schumer is officially the most unpopular Dem Senate leader with his own party on record.
Why? Most Democrats think Dems in Congress do too little to oppose Trump (69%).

As RedState readers will recall, there were calls in early 2025 for a 2028 primary challenge to Schumer, with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) being floated as a formidable contender.
Those calls got louder when Schumer caved on the continuing resolution in March, with things getting so bad for Schumer that he had to postpone book tour dates due to alleged security threats.
While AOC has dodged questions about a Schumer challenge, she hasn’t expressly stated that she’s ruled one out, either. And after eight Democrats on the Senate side broke ranks to begin the process of ending the Schumer Shutdown, one has to think AOC is giving the idea even more consideration.

GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson (LA-04) repeatedly reminded folks throughout the October shutdown that Schumer was doing this to appease his base after he let them down in March, in hopes of avoiding a primary challenge from the likes of AOC.
And yet at the end of the day, Schumer has nothing to show for it, and in fact finds himself in an even worse position than he was in at the start of it.
You love to see it. You truly do.
Editor’s Note: After more than 40 days of screwing Americans, a few Senate Dems have finally caved. The Schumer Shutdown was never about principle—just inflicting pain for political points.
