President Trump is expected to press Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept a new plan to end the war in Gaza during a meeting in the White House on Monday.
The raised challenges meeting occurs while the first anniversary of Hamas’ attack against Israel is getting closer – and as a growing list of nations recognized the Palestinian state last week at the United Nations General Assembly.
Trump and Netanyahu should organize a press conference at 1:15 p.m.. Listen to the special NPR special cover by pressing the audio player above. You can also watch the press conference live here:
Trump has so far supported Israel so far, insisting that Hamas has released all Israeli hostages held in Gaza since October 7, and accusing that the recognition of “reward” Hamas “of recognizing Hamas.
Trump also raised expectations for an agreement, even before Israel and Hamas report. “I think we have an agreement,” Trump told journalists on Friday.
The proposal for multiple points that the United States shared with regional partners would end the War of Israel in the territory, would strengthen aid to Gaza and forced Hamas to release the remaining Israeli hostages within 48 hours. A coalition of international partners would oversee the reconstruction of Gaza, a source familiar with the plans said at NPR.
Trump was one of Netanyahu’s strongest supporters, but he became more and more frustrated by the Prime Minister when the war has dragged and loss of life increased. Earlier this month, Trump said he was blinded when Israel was strike against Hamas officials in Qatar, an ally of the United States and a mediator in the cease-fire talks.
Ivo Daalder, who was an American NATO ambassador to Obama administration, said Monday’s meeting was considered a real test for Trump to see how much he is willing to use an American lever effect in a way he has not had so far.
“It is the real indicator if he wants peace. Not only because he wants a Nobel Peace Prize, but because he wants the end of conflicts,” said Daalder. “Because the world is against Israel and the United States. There is no one else. And he is the only one who can move Netanyahu.”
