Pee-wee Herman’s bike is at the Alamo, but not where you think
It took 40 years, but the Pee-Wee bike is now at Alamo. Just not the basement.
The Alamo announced last week that it had acquired and displayed the emblematic bicycle of Tim Burton’s film in 1985, “Big Adventure by Pee-Wee”.
The San Antonio monument plays a key role in the film Chronicling Pee-Wee’s research by Herman for his stolen bike when a sneaky aviation tells him that the bike is located in Alamo’s basement. Pee-Wee, played by the late Paul Reubens, learns that Alamo has no basement, but has not prevented tourists with ironic intelligence.
“This is the most common question that our team of services to the guests hears is:” Where is the basement of Alamo? “” Said Jonathan Huhn, senior communications director for Alamo Trust, Inc., the non -profit organization that oversees Alamo operations. “It is an emblematic song in the history of pop culture Allamo.”
The red and white bike – or as the pee calls it in the film, “the best bike around the world” – is adorned with banners on the handlebars and an emblem of lion at the front. Huhn said he was acquired during an auction in Los Angeles.
The bicycle will serve as a centerpiece of the Mays Family Legacy Gallery, who examines the cultural impact of Alamo, which is part of a new reception center and a museum that will open in the fall of 2027. He will join other pop culture articles, including memories of the 1960 film on Alamo who played John Wayne.
“It is really a bridge for pop culture” that will lead people to learn the story of Alamo, Huhn said.
But before that, the bike will be exposed for a period limited to the Ralston Family Collections Center. Alamo also plans to organize a free public projection of “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure” in Plaza de Valero. More details on the dates for the screen and the projection will be published later.
Unlike Alamo, the building where the Pee-Wee bike will finally be located has a basement. But, before asking, this is not that the bicycle will be.
