A volcanic eruption in the southwest Iceland has once again forced the evacuation of local residents and the internationally known blue geothermal spa, Ruv national diffuser reported.
The eruption started around 4 am following an intense seismic swarm in the Reykjanes peninsula, southwest of the capital, said Reykjavik, Iceland.
The city of Grindavik was evacuated shortly after the start of the seismic activity, with campers and guests of the Blue Lagoon forced to quickly make their bags, reported Ruv.
The eruption lava flows south-east of a crack in the sterile landscape which measures 700 to 1,000 meters (2,296 to 3,280 feet) wide, but La Roche Fondue does not threaten any infrastructure, said the Met Office.
Grindavik has been evacuated several times since November 2023, when a volcano in the region has come to life after being dormant for about 800 years.
