UN adopts resolution on Afghanistan’s Taliban rule over US objections

The United Nations – The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on US objections calling for Taliban leaders in Afghanistan on Monday to reverse their aggravation of the oppression of women and girls and to the elimination of all terrorist organizations.
The 11 -page resolution also emphasizes “the importance of creating opportunities for economic, development and prosperity in Afghanistan” and urges donors to tackle the country’s casualness and economic crisis.
The resolution is not legally restrictive but is considered to be reflecting world opinion. The vote was 116 in favor, with two – the United States and the close ally of Israel – opposite and 12 abstentions, including Russia, China, India and Iran.
Since his return to power in Afghanistan in 2021, the Taliban have imposed severe measures, prohibiting the women of public places and girls from frequenting school beyond the sixth year. Last week, Russia became the first country to officially recognize the Taliban government.
Germany’s ambassador Antje Leendertse, whose country sponsored the resolution, told the assembly before the vote that his country and many others remained seriously concerned about the situation desire for human rights in Afghanistan, in particular “the almost total erasure of the Taliban” of women and girls.
The central message of the resolution, she said, is to say to the Afghan mothers who hold sick and undernourished children or to cry victims of terrorist attacks, as well as the millions of Afghan women and girls locked up at home, that they were not forgotten.
US Minister Counselor Jonathan Shrier criticized the resolution, which he said, rewards “the Taliban failure with more commitment and more resources”. He said that Trump administration is doubting that they will never pursue policies “in accordance with the expectations of the international community”.
“For decades, we have assured the burden of supporting the Afghan people over time, money and, above all, American life,” he said. “It’s time for the Taliban to intensify. The United States no longer allow its odious behavior. ”
Last month, the Trump administration prohibited Afghans in the hope of constantly reinstalling themselves in the United States and those who seek to come temporarily, with exceptions.
The resolution expresses its appreciation to governments welcoming Afghan refugees, distinguishing the two countries that have taken the most: Iran and Pakistan. Shrier also opposed this, accusing Iran of executing Afghans “at an alarming pace without regular procedure” and by force the Afghans in his militias.
Although the resolution notes improvements in the global security situation in Afghanistan, it reiterates concerns concerning the attacks of Al-Qaida and militants of the Islamic State and their affiliates. He calls on Afghanistan “to take active measures to fight, dismantle and eliminate all terrorist organizations equally and without discrimination.”
The General Assembly also encouraged the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to appoint a coordinator to facilitate “a more coherent, coordinated and structured approach” of its international commitments on Afghanistan.
