Springfield launches program to boost minority businesses

Springfield is launching a new educational program to support minority-owned businesses and nonprofits.
The Springfield Minority Business Institute is expected to begin meeting in February, according to a community announcement. The multi-week program will offer targeted instruction, access to resources and networking opportunities.
The initiative is a partnership between the City of Springfield and the Office of Community Relations. It is scheduled to run from February through March, with classes held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. The program will conclude with a graduation ceremony April 1 at the University of Illinois Springfield.
Program aims to support minority entrepreneurs
“The Springfield Minority Business Institute reflects our commitment to creating opportunities for all entrepreneurs to succeed,” Mayor Misty Buscher said in the announcement. “By connecting minority-owned businesses and nonprofits with the tools, knowledge and relationships they need, we are strengthening our local economy and investing in the future of our community.”
During the first three weeks, participants will receive instruction from City of Springfield departments, including the Office of Planning and Economic Development, Building and Zoning and Purchasing. The Springfield Urban League is expected to lead a discussion Feb. 25. Sessions will cover city processes, compliance requirements and opportunities for engagement with municipal government.
Classes to be held at multiple locations
Classes are scheduled for Feb. 4, 11, 18 and 25 in the Community Room at Fire Station 6, 2121 S. 11th St. Additional sessions are planned for March 4 at the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, 501 E. Capitol Ave.; March 11 at the University of Illinois Springfield School of Business and Management; and March 18 at Innovate Springfield, 15 N. Old State Capitol Plaza.
The program will conclude with a graduation ceremony April 1 at the University of Illinois Springfield.
