Squid Game Creator Reveals Alternate Ending That Fans Say Should’ve Been the Real One
The creator of Squid Game Hwang Dong -Hyuk revealed that season 3 had almost a radically different end – an end that could have happened better with the fans always divided on the way in which the successful series ended.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hwang said that he had initially written an end where player 456, Seong Gi-Hun, leaves the murderous games for good. This contrasts strongly with the version that made the screening, where Gi-Hun sacrifices his life at the end for the new 222 player.
Hwang shared that his original plan for the Netflix series was much more optimistic. Gi-Hun, the main character of the show, would have ended the game, would have left alive and found his daughter in the United States.
“At the beginning, I had a vague idea of how I would end the story. And at the time, there was an end of gi-hun, in one way or another, and to go alive and to go see his daughter in America,” said Hwang. “So at the origin, I thought that the person who testifies to the American recruiter would be a gi-hun.”
But over time, Hwang said that history had evolved when it was reflected in current events and the broader message of the show. “I am more and more witness to what was going on in the world,” he said, and finally decided that the sacrifice of Gi-Hun should have a heavier meaning.
“I thought it was more suitable for Gi-Hun to send this powerful and impactful message to the world,” said Hwang, adding that the darker end was supposed to reflect the necessary urgent sacrifices in today’s world to get a better future.

Public reactions to season 3 final
It is a choice that was not suitable well with a large part of the base of Squid Game fans. Some estimated that the final touch betrayed the arch of the character of Gi-Hun, especially after spending two seasons suffering from immense trauma and having seemed to prioritize the security of his family. Others have found it too dark and open, triggering passionate discussions – and many memes – online.
This is not the first time that a calmar game final has stimulated controversy. When season 1 was created in 2021, the series has become a global phenomenon almost overnight, beating Netflix Records and transforming its dark social comments into an essential television. But even then, the last episodes left divided fans.
Now, the end of Hwang feeds speculation to find out if the last season of the show will be really set up for a show derived in the United States.
Talk about a possible American spin-off
Hwang stressed that Cate Blanchett’s surprise camée as an American recruiter in the Los Angeles final was not intended to set up a future spin-off, but rather to highlight a wider thematic point. He told the Hollywood Reporter that he “did not finish it on this note in order to deliberately leave the place so that other stories occur”, explaining that the script for Gi-Hun and the Man in Korea really ended.
He said that the scene of American recruiters had been manufactured to symbolize the sustainable nature of capitalist systems.
That said, Hwang recognized the rumors of an American version linked to David Fincher and said it would look at it if it had been done, but for the moment, there is no official confirmation of Netflix.
