Startling: Denmark Zoo Wants to Feed Predators

Zoos of the world can do a lot of excellent work. Some endangered species are still with us only because of sheltered zoo populations. Every day, people around the world visit zoos, learn wild animals that they would never have seen otherwise, and perhaps even develop an appreciation for these magnificent animals.
Of course, some zoo animals have special problems. You cannot feed a lion hay after all; Large predators need meat. Not tofu, not vegetarian “garden burgers”, but meat, preferably raw, and a lot.
Now, a zoo in Denmark, the Aalborg zoo, has found a unique solution to feed at least some of their predatory creatures: they ask people to give their pets to serve as snacks. Yes, really. But it’s not as bad as you think – at least not completely.
The Aalborg zoo said that it was trying to imitate the natural food chain of animals that were hosting there “for animal welfare and professional integrity” and offers that pets will be “slowly euthanized” by the staff formed.
The northern Denmark zoo explained in an article on Facebook that “if you have a healthy animal that must be given for various reasons, do not hesitate to have it given it.”
Now they don’t talk about dogs or cats here. Just a few slightly less cuddling pets. The zoo assures us that these pets will not only be thrown into the enclosures with the predators; They will be first first.
The zoo points to guinea pigs, rabbits and chickens as possible donations. After being euthanized, animals will be used as fodder, said the zoo.
“In this way, nothing is waste – and we ensure the natural behavior, nutrition and well -being of our predators,” said the zoo.
Well, ok, the guinea pigs are quite cuddled. In fact, they are adorable. The same goes for most domestic rabbits. Now chickens, I would be ready to accompany this; The chickens are nasty, stinking and have a brain the size of a baby stroke, so don’t really bind with humans.
Even without the “adorable” factor, there is another problem; A rabbit or a guinea pig would not even be a light snack to say, a lion. But the Aalborg zoo can also have an idea there.
The online call for pet donations is accompanied by a photo of a wild cat that has put the teeth with its wide open mouth and a link to the zoo website, noting that the installation is also interested in receiving horses.
Horses? For lions, tigers and bears? Oh, my!

Someone clearly didn’t think that. People get attached to their pets – even small blurred things like guinea pigs. Euthanasia or not, it is difficult to see a Danish family, say the one who moves in another city, telling Little Vilja that she must abandon her rabbit Gudrun – “But don’t worry, my dear, the zoo wildcat will be happy to have it for supper. No, not as a guest. Also a main dish.”
Seriously, what did these people think? Why not just do another fundraising to buy more Chow Purina Lion? (I don’t know if it’s really one thing.) It seems to be a remarkably poorly thought -out proposition.
Come on, Denmark. Get with the program. People love their pets.
