Urban scavengers like spotted hyenas prevent more than 1,000 tonnes of carbon emissions a year in Ethiopia’s second-largest city, according to a new study revealing the role of these predators as accidental eco-warriors. By consuming organic waste that would otherwise rot, these predators save the city of Mekelle more than US$100,000 in waste management costs while reducing the significant health risk associated with routine roadside dumping.
