The complex tattoos of a 2,500 -year -old Siberian “ice mother” were finally revealed by high -tech imaging.

The conceptions reveal leopards, tigers, a deer, a rooster and even mythical creatures lost for a long time.

They are so detailed that even a modern tattoo artist would find it difficult to reproduce them, according to the researchers behind the discovery.

It would have belonged to the nomadic culture of Pazyryk, which traveled the land between China and Europe.

The scans exposed the tattoo “complex, crunchy and uniform” which could not be seen with the naked eye.

During the two millennia, ink has become almost invisible on the body while the skin darkens over time.

“Ideas really lead to the house to know how sophisticated these people were, the main author of Dr. Gino Caspari and the University of Bern told BBC News.

Archaeologists worked with researcher Daniel Riday, a tattoo artist who reproduces old ink on his own body to understand how they were made.

The tattoo was probably widespread during prehistoric times, but few remains of that time are well preserved enough to investigate.

But the so-called “ice mummies” of the Altai mountains in Siberia were often locked in ice tombs that kept the skin.

Although the tattoos were not visibly on the skin, they were brought back to life using a digital photograph near infrared at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

High resolution scans were able to reveal the decorations for the first time in 2,500 years.

“It made me feel that we were much closer to seeing the people behind art, how they worked and learned. The images came to life,” said Dr Caspari.

On her right forearm, the woman had an image of leopards and tigers around the head of two deer.

On the left arm, a mythical creature in the shape of a griffin with the body of a lion and the head and the wings of an eagle seems to fight with a deer.

“The twisted posterior bodies and the really intense battle scenes of wild animals are typical of culture,” said Dr Caspari.

The “maman of ice” also had a rooster on her thumb, showing “an intriguing style with a certain unique character,” explains Dr. Caspari.

The design was made with a uniform thickness, suggesting sophisticated methods and tools for tattooing.

Some lines were created using a multipoint tool, while others were made with a thinner tool at a point, depending on the study.

The researchers could even see where the former tattoo artist stopped working and resumed in the overlap of certain lines.

“Many cultures from around the world have traditionally used packets of vegetable spines and thorns”, co-author of the study Aaron Deter-WolfAn archaeologist at the Archeology Division of Tennessee and an expert in the old tattoo, told Live Science in an email.

“We are considering the multi-point tool as a bunch of teeth closely in cluster, probably linked with thread or tendon.”

The tools were made of natural and biodegradable materials, which means that researchers are unable to examine the tools themselves.
