Donald Trump on Sunday paid his respects to the two people killed and nine injured in a shooting at Brown University.

“Before we begin, I just want to pay tribute to the people, unfortunately two are no longer with us, Brown University, nine injured and two are watching us from heaven right now,” the president told guests at a White House holiday reception.

“Brown University,” Trump added, “a great school, truly one of the greatest schools in the world. Things can happen.”

Saturday’s violence in Brown brought the number of mass shootings in the United States for the year to at least 389, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The attack reignited the ongoing debate in the United States over whether the federal government should implement stricter gun controls in response to the country’s continued high number of mass shootings reported.

Sen. Chris Murphy, a Democrat, drew parallels to the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting in his home state of Connecticut, which killed 26 people.

“What I know is that a community never recovers from a shooting like this,” he told CNN on Sunday.
