How do Super Bowl squares work?

All you have to do is print this PDF (also available in jpeg format) and ask everyone at your party to choose one or more squares. This game is random, so anyone can play, whether they’re a big fan or it’s their first soccer game of the year; the first square chosen has as much chance of winning as the last one. Once the grid is fully assigned, randomize the numbers 0 to 9 on the top and 0 to 9 on the left side. You can draw numbers out of a hat, use a deck of cards or a random number generator: anything will do as long as it’s random.

Each square will now reside at the intersection of a row and a column. The game is played using the last digit of the game score at predetermined intervals. You can play minute by minute, but the traditional way is to use the score at the end of each quarter. Using only the last digit of the score, the winning square is the one that corresponds to the score on the grid.

An example: after the first quarter, if it’s Patriots 7, Seahawks 3, then the player with the square that corresponds to 7 for Patriots and 3 for Seahawks is the winner. It would also be the same square if the score was instead Patriots 17, Seahawks 3: only the last number counts.

Prizes arrive at the end of each quarter and for the final score. You determine what or how much each is worth. You don’t have to be a fan of any team or even a football fan to play. Choose the correct square and match the end of quarter numbers and you win. Enjoy the Super Bowl!

What are the best numbers to have?

In 2024, we analyzed every NFL regular season and playoff game across three seasons (2020-2023) – a sample size of over 850 games – and broke down scores by team by quarter. Overall, as you might have already guessed, 0 and 7 are the best numbers, followed by 3, then 4 and 6. Any combination of these five numbers is a good result.

#1 gets better as the game goes on, while #2, 8, 9, and 5 are generally difficult to operate.

There was only A combination that did not appear in all quarters. If you draw the dreaded 2-2 square, you’ll have to look for something that has failed to happen in over 3,400 quarters.

Tips for Randomizing Your Super Bowl Squares

Once you have filled your grid with everyone’s squares, you will need to randomly fill the top row and the left column with 10 numbers, from 0 to 9. The drawing of lots can be part of the fun, as everyone discovers which squares are assigned to them, so feel free to demonstrate it. There’s no wrong way to do this, as long as it’s random, so here are some suggestions:

• Use a shuffled deck of playing cards. Determine which team is red and which is black, then deal the cards one by one, face up, filling in the spaces as each one appears. You can use the full deck and ignore the face cards or prepare it so that only the 20 cards you want to use are included. Use 10 or one of the figures for the number 0.

• Use a 10-sided die. This is probably the easiest way to do it, but it probably requires acquiring one for this purpose. They can be found online and at most table game stores.

• The phone number game. Select people at random and ask them to add the last four digits of their phone number. Use the last digit of the sum to fill in the top row, then repeat the process for the column using the first three digits of the phone numbers instead.

• Use your local lottery numbers. This works well if your square pool is filled well in advance. Pick a few local lotteries in advance and everyone can know the results at the same time, even if they’re not together. You can use the Massachusetts lottery results to determine the Patriots side and the Washington State lottery results for the Seahawks, for example. They both offer a variety of Pick 3 and Pick 4 games, but you can use any game and select the numbers however you want, just be clear in advance.

• Random number generator. There are many available online, so search for one you like. If you do this in advance, you can even record your screen while you generate the numbers, which you can then send to friends and family to reveal.
