‘Superman’ Debuts Domestic with $122 Million, Underwhelms with $95 Million Overseas

New York (AP)-In order to launch a new era for DC studios, James Gunn’s “Superman” opened $ 122 million in ticket sales in the United States and Canada during the weekend, according to Studio estimates on Sunday.
DC and Warner Bros. have rolled a lot on “Superman”. While the Walt Disney Co. Marvel studios had its own share of difficulties, DC superheroes have recently found kryptonite in theaters. Films like “Joker: Folie à Deunt”, “The Flash” and “Shazam! Fury of the Gods ”all collapsed.
But “Superman”, written and directed by Gunn, is intended for a new start. This is the first version entirely directed by Gunn and Peter Safran, co-chefs of DC Studios, because they received the keys to the Cinématographic Universe of DC superheroes.
And while Gunn transformed the “Guardians of the Galaxy” into a massive success for Marvel, his irreverent and idiosyncratic touch made the director – once a B -Film filmmaker with Troma Entertainment – an improbable intendant for one of the most bancable and beloved brands.
The almost target opening was the third largest of 2025, and the first DC title to exceed $ 100 million in its opening weekend since “Wonder Woman” in 2017. Warner Bros. Could also celebrate a unique heat sequence: “Superman” is their fifth film in a row to open more than $ 45 million.
“This is a whole victory for DC Studios,” said Jeffrey Goldstein, head of the Warner Bros. “We had to get the confidence of the fans base, and we didn’t get it. They were clear to us that we had to step back and reintegrate.”
Ticket sales were relatively soft for “Superman” abroad. In 78 international markets, he reported $ 95 million. In China, he collected only $ 6.6 million.
David A. Gross, who heads the Cinematographic Consulting Consulting, described The International Performance the only one against the otherwise strong “Superman” beginnings.
“So far, foreign openings are not equal to the servant,” said Gross. “Superman has always been identified as a typically American character and story, and in some parts of the world, America is not currently taking advantage of its greatest popularity.”
As an American icon, “Superman” also attracted political discourse at home. Some right commentators criticized the film as “Woke” after Gunn described Krypton’s superhero as “an immigrant”. On X, the White House published an image by President Donald Trump as a Superman.
In “Superman”, which cost around $ 225 million to do, Gunn directs the steel man in a radically different direction from that of the previous iterations of the filmmaker Zack Snyder. Jumping the original story of Kansas, the film is rather resuming with Superman (David Corenswet) after his first defeat. Rachel Brosnahan plays Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult is Lex Luthor.
The beginnings of “Superman” were not close to the launch of $ 166 million for “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice” by Snyder, in 2016. But it opened up above, not to inflation, that “Man of Steel” by Snyder. This film made its debut with $ 116 million in 2013.
But while Snyder’s films were often unloved by criticism, largely the good criticisms praised Gunn’s “Superman”. On Rotten Tomatoes, he scored 82% of costs – the best for the franchise since the first two films with Christopher Reeve: “Superman” (1978) and “Superman II” (1980). The public gave him an “A-” Cinemascore.
“Superman” also faced significant competition. The best film of last week, “Jurassic World Rebirth”, slipped in second place with 40 million dollars. With “Superman” absorbing many large format screens, the seventh film “Jurassic” by Universal Pictures slipped 57% of its opening weekend. With Scarlett Johansson, “Jurassic World Rebirth” had a world start of $ 318.3 million. In two weeks, it is amassed $ 529.5 million worldwide.
The biggest success of the Apple Studios box office is also still in the “F1”. The Formula 1 action thriller by Joseph Kosinski, with Brad Pitt, arrived third with $ 13 million in his third weekend. The film, distributed by Warner Bros., collected $ 393.4 million worldwide in three weeks. But it also brings a high price of around $ 250 million, more than at least $ 100 million in promotion.
