Superman the Immigrant Would Have Saved Texas

In his weekly newsletter, Elie Mystal Lambast the shameful priorities of the Republicans – and their deadly consequences.

The number of flood deaths in Texas has climbed at least 120 people at the time of writing this article. This number includes at least 36 children who had been campers at the Camp Mystic, in the county of Kerr, Texas, which we now know that we know on a dangerous flood plain. We also know that local officials were well aware of the dangers and did nothing. The reports indicate that an early alert system for the floods would have cost Kerr county about $ 1 million – and when he did not get a grant for this money, the effort blocked. Meanwhile, the Texas Legislative Assembly did not adopt a bill this spring which would have supported subsidies to local disaster warning systems.
Texas has spent $ 11 billion on “border security” since 2021 as part of “L’Opes Lonestar” (I wrote on this unconstitutional stupidity here). But that would not lead the funds to the city to help ensure the safety of children.
If the County of Kerr had asked for $ 1,000,000 to project the river with alligators and other traps to drowning the immigrants who tried to swim, Governor Greg Abbott would have found the money. But keeping children out of avoidable disasters is not Abbott’s priority.
Or America.
The bad and the ugly
- Crisis actor and internal security secretary Kristi Noem criticized the “slow” response from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to floods. She uses disaster to renew her calls to eliminate the agency. But this slow answer is the direct result of a FEMA policy Instituted by Noem herself. Any FEMA contract costing more than $ 100,000 now requires personal and written approval of Noem. If the FEMA is slow, it is because Noem is too busy choosing its next dog for target practice to do its real work.
- Speaking of things that are a direct threat to children that this country does nothing to stop, a new report tells us that the main source of stolen cannons is … cars parked. These weapons then continue to be used disproportionately in crimes. Thus, not only is the “good guy with a proverbial weapon” really useless in crime prevention; It turns out that the good guy probably left his gun in his car, which was then stolen by the villain.
- The trial on Trump’s attacks on foreign students in Harvard began this week. I will ignore this for a while. Finally, there will be a verdict, which Trump will lose; Then this verdict will be on appeal and the Supreme Court will find a way to win Trump. I will be careful again then.
- I am not reversed on what will happen in the Harvard trial. This is what is going on all the time now. A new report shows that in May and June, Trump lost in the district court 94.3% of the time. But when business was devoted to the Supreme Court in the last mandate, Trump won 93.7% of the time.
- Speaking of this year’s Supreme Court’s mandate, Adam Feldman wrote a statistical analysis of the end of the year of all the courts of the court on Empirical scotus. He finds that what is emerged is a “structural majority” where the six republicans constantly exceed the three liberals on critical partisan issues, even if this year, the Liberals have won more than usual. There is no longer a “swing” vote on the bench. I didn’t need to withdraw my calculator to tell you, but if you like numbers, Adam can be convincing.

- David Dickson and Mark Hertsgaard explain in The nation that the children of Texas did not have to die.
- Paramount once again proves that companies’ benefits are greater for media conglomerates than democracy. In The nationVictor Pickard explains that we have to wean our media from the business property.
Worse argument of the week
The Northern Carolina senator, Thom Tillis, retires. Apparently it now means, and only now it is able to locate a spine. Tillis voted against Trump’s expenditure bill. In a statement announcing his retirement, he said: “I can’t wait to have the pure freedom to call balls and strikes as I see, and represent the great inhabitants of North Carolina at best of my abilities.”
I hate that. Tillis has been a senator since 2015. He had “pure freedom” to “call balls and strikes” all this period. Indeed, It was his work to represent the inhabitants of North Carolina “to the best of [his] Capacity “since he was elected. The idea that he can only fully do this work when he has a foot on the door is exasperating.
We accept this logic distorted all the time, in particular Republicans. In one way or another, we have absorbed the idea that an American senator, elected to a gigantic quarter of six years (which is the longest mandate for any elected official in the country), is somehow “not free” to do what they believe to be fair as they wish to request a re -election. It was not until the announcement of retirement that we even dare to hope that the Republicans could place themselves in the service of the people of this country, instead of Donald Trump.

Even then, however, this hope is often destroyed anyway. Tillis will have many opportunities to frustrate the Trump administration with regard to legal appointments, for example. He sits on the Judicial Committee and Trump’s candidates are universally horrible. But will he do it?
Court responsibilityAlex Aronson predicts that Tillis could reveal himself as the former senator of Nevada, Jeff Flake: a person who talks about a good game but who votes for Trump nominees each time the tokens are broken. People may remember that Flake called for an investigation into the attempted rape against the candidate of the Supreme Court of Trump, Brett Kavanaugh, after a constituent shouted in an elevator and changed his mind on the issue. But people should never forget that Flake finally voted to confirm Kavanaugh, even if no serious investigation took place.
I expect Tillis to take the same route. He will reach a level of “concern” by Susan Collins, then will come back immediately to reach a level of complicity of Susan Collins.
A senator who feels free to “vote their conscience” only when he no longer wants to be in politics should not have put himself in politics in the first place.
What I wrote
None of me this week digitally, because I worked on a printed part. In addition, I recover from the end of the duration of the Supreme Court. I played a lot of No Man’s Sky With my children.
In news unrelated to current chaos
There is a new Superman film. Superman is not my favorite comic book hero: he is too powerful, which means that most stories about him must invent stupid means of making him less powerful to add tensions, drama and issues. But, whatever, I’m probably going to look at it.
Apparently, when I will see it, I will not have to deal with Republicans in the theater. The white wing turned on the steel man due to a comment made by the director of the film, James Gunn.
Current number

Gunn said: “Superman is the history of America. An immigrant who came from other places and populated the country, but for me, it is above all a story that says that basic human kindness is a value and is something that we have lost.”
Can you understand how this statement has banged fanatics? For those who do not speak Republicans, the problem is that Gunn qualified Supes an “immigrant” – and “immigrants” are bad, according to the Republicans.
The Wing-Wing Outline Machine has entered Overdrive, with various white culture warriors promising to boycott the film. The former Superman and notorious television actor Maga Pinhead Dean Cain said that the new film was “too awake”. However, my favorite hysterics come from Stephen L. Miller (the journalist at On Blanc Miller, not the deputy chief of Trump of Ghoulishness Miller). He said: “Superman is not an immigrant. He is an orphan. The fact that they can spend $ 300 million on a film and cannot get this very basic concept is something.”
The fact that Stephen Miller is paid to publish words to live is really something.
Superman is, of course, an immigrant – he is not America, or even soil 3 (earth), but he lives here –And He is an orphan. As usual, Republicans have problems with concepts that require several things to be true at the same time. He is also an “illegal” immigrant, according to Maga Logic, because he was sent here without appropriate documentation, and has never returned to Krypton to “queu” behind all the other extraterrestrials of the space that came to earth “the right way”. And it is a “refugee”. His native planet has been literally destroyed and he searches here for asylum in the immensity of space.
However, despite Miller’s demonstrable ignorance of Kal -El’s background frame – or, moreover, the background of the creators of Kal -El – I welcome his new care and his respect for the orphans. I can only assume that Miller will now accommodate, with open arms, all the “non -immigrants” of Gaza who were orphans by the bombings of Israel. Welcome to the progressive wing, Steve.
