Suspect arrested for murder in shooting of man, 24, in Brooklyn lobby during long fight

A suspect has been arrested on murder charges for shooting a 24-year-old man during a violent argument in a Brooklyn apartment building, police said Monday.
Yonathan Guzman, 22, is charged with murder and gun possession for the 2:05 a.m. Sunday shooting in the lobby of his apartment building on Dorchester Road near E. 21st St. in Flatbush.
Guzman allegedly shot the victim in the upper body during the confrontation.
Medics rushed the victim to Kings County Hospital, but he could not be saved. His name has not yet been released.
A 20-year-old neighbor who lives in an apartment adjacent to the suspect’s unit described the hour-long standoff that led to the shooting as “a drunken fight that went really bad.”
“They were really loud,” said the neighbor, who asked to be identified only by her first name, Isabel. “I heard kids crying, stuff getting in there. I didn’t know what was going on.
She called 911 as the fight intensified.

“I just felt like someone was going to get hurt,” she said. “There was just too much noise.”
When police arrived on the scene, she said, the officers tried to comfort the victim, telling him to breathe and assuring him that medics were on the way.
Guzman was arrested as a person of interest at the scene and charged later Sunday. His arraignment was pending Monday in Brooklyn Criminal Court.
