Switch 2 pricing and next PlayStation release could be impacted by memory shortage

Sony and Nintendo are reportedly feeling squeezed by the RAM shortage, as demand from AI data centers takes up a growing share of memory chip production. In response to rising costs and dwindling chip supplies, Sony is considering pushing back the release of its next PlayStation console “to 2028, or even 2029,” according to industry sources cited by Bloombergwhile Nintendo could increase the price of its Switch 2 console by $450 this year.
The delay would be a considerable departure from Sony’s usual release schedule, which has launched a new generation of consoles every six to seven years since the original PlayStation launched in 1994. With the current PlayStation 5 console released in November 2020, it should have launched before the end of 2027.
The lack of memory is also a blow for Nintendo, which visibly did not increase the launch price of the Switch 2 last year despite the drastic tariffs imposed by Trump. Bloomberg offers no details on the possible price increase. We have contacted Sony and Nintendo for comment.
