A middle school in Geneva sustained minor damage after a fire in the early hours of Friday morning, according to a news release from the Geneva Fire Department.

At around 4:15 a.m., the Geneva Fire Department was dispatched to respond to an activated fire alarm at the Geneva Middle School North building at 1357 Viking Drive, according to the release.

On arrival, firefighters found several activated smoke detectors and smoke on the first floor, and crews then discovered a small fire on the first floor in the school’s northeast section, the release said.

The building’s sprinkler system suppressed the flames before firefighters completed their operations, bringing the fire under control in under 30 minutes, officials said.

The building was not occupied, and no injuries were reported, the fire department said. Estimates of the damage are not yet available.

The preliminary cause of the fire appears to have been a malfunctioning carpet drying fan that ignited and extended flames to a janitorial cart, according to the fire department’s news release. Surrounding areas of the building sustained fire, heat, smoke and water damage, officials said.

Firefighters and paramedics from Elburn, Batavia, St. Charles and Fermilab assisted at the scene, the release noted, and the Geneva Police Department also assisted with the response.
