Teen shot Thursday on far East Side of Aurora, police say

A 16-year-old was shot and killed Thursday evening in far east Aurora, the Aurora Police Department said Friday.

On Thursday, shortly before 5:50 p.m., officers responded to the 2800 block of Village Green Drive after Aurora police received reports of a shooting victim near a park where children were playing, according to a police department news release.

When officers arrived, they found a 16-year-old with a gunshot wound to his lower extremity, the press release states. The teen was transported to a nearby hospital and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Specialized units such as the department’s K-9 Unit, Special Operations Group, Community Oriented Policing Unit and Special Response Team responded to the scene to help secure the area and search for those involved, according to the release.

Detectives from the department’s Bureau of Investigation also responded to the scene and began investigating the circumstances of the incident, according to the release. Evidence technicians also responded to identify and collect forensic evidence, according to police.

The investigation into the shooting remains active, according to the release. The department is asking anyone with information to call the Aurora Police Department’s Investigations Division at 630-256-5500.
