Tesla’s cheaper Model Y finally breaks cover

Tesla’s more affordable long -term electric vehicle will not be released until next year, but recently spotted non -branch on a highway in Texas. And no, your eyes do not deceive you; It’s just a cheaper version of the Y model.
The rumor that the affordable EV is just a naked circulation model since Elon Musk canceled a previous model which was to be built on a whole new platform. The so-called “Model 2” was supposed to be “$ 25, O00 EV” promised by Musk who, at some point, was presented as having a design inspired by the Cyber-Cybertruck. Musk would have canceled the new model in favor of the construction of cybercab without steering wheel, which was introduced last year and should enter into production in 2026.
At the same time, Tesla says that it will be in production on a more affordable version of the Y model, which is currently starting at around $ 45,000. A variant with Florida manufacturer’s plates was recently spotted by driving near Gigafactory from Tesla to Austin, Texas, by the aerospace engineer Ryan Mable, who published some photos on X. (he was also published on Reddit, but I think that Mable published his images first.)
So what’s different in this model? On the one hand, the front light bar which was introduced for the first time with the “juniper” refreshment is missing. Instead, Tesla returned to the use of separate headlights, while keeping the newly narrow lights of the refreshment. The rear light bar is also missing, replaced by a horizontal black line. And there is no “Tesla” badge in the back as we saw with the warming of the juniper.
The tailgate also seems to have a little over-engine, the trunk cover a little exceeding on the rear plastic fairing above the license plate. The adjustment is lower than SNUG, which could trigger flashbacks among the owners of Tesla who remember the bad old days of panel gaps and other problems of adjustment and finishing.
Otherwise, the new budgetary model is very similar to the current version. We still do not know what type of battery this thing will have and how it will have an impact on energy capacity, load and range. But there have been a few other details that have fled in recent days, including a bunch of revelations from a recent firmware update that was noticed by Tesla Hacker Greentheonly.
According to Green, the new model will be available in versions with all -wheel drive and rear traction. Tesla gets rid of amenities such as the sunroof, the folding of the mirror of power, the second display and the lamps with water puddles. The cabin lights, mood lighting, suspension and seat controls are all degraded. And the 19 -inch wheels are exchanged for the smallest 18 inches. Tesla has not yet revealed a price, but rumors start at $ 39,999 – which is far from the 25,000 EV promised.
Of course, the prototype is only a prototype, and all these changes that have been disclosed are only preliminary. We really don’t know what will end in the final version, but it certainly establishes a basis for what to expect.

While Tesla begins to eliminate things to help reduce the price of the Y model, it will behave against its overall objective to allow all its vehicles to be entirely autonomous. Could they delete the computer that feeds the automatic driver and full self-control? What about external sensors? The model currently has eight cameras there; If Tesla deletes some, will FSD still work? (Not that it works perfectly with eight cameras.) Compromises could become quite steep if Tesla starts on this road.
The best place to shave the costs is the battery, which is generally the most expensive component of an EV. Tesla’s cheapest electric vehicles already use Lithium-Phosphate (LFP) chemies at low cost, almost all provided by Chinese battery manufacturers. The company recently started production on its own LFP cells in its nevada factory, it is therefore up to it that the new model cheaper is likely to use these batteries.
Tesla has just had a record quarter, mainly due to the expiration of the federal tax credit of $ 7,500. Musk warned against a few “difficult neighborhoods” because Tesla sales should drop after the prices of the vehicle. Having a more affordable model will potentially help Tesla fill the gap towards the promised future of autonomous cars and humanoid robots – if we never get there. But will customers opt for a barebon version of a car that has already been on the road for six years and counting?
