Zohran Mamdani and other top New York City officials could see their salaries increase under a proposed 16% pay raise that council members hope to pass soon, according to reports.

A bill introduced by Councilwoman Nantasha Williams, D-Queens, would increase member salaries from $148,500 to $172,500, the New York Post reported Tuesday.

If passed, the salary increase would also apply to the new mayor, public defender, comptroller and borough presidents.

That would bring Mamdani’s salary to nearly $300,000, up from the current $258,000, the outlet said.

Other top officials, such as the comptroller, public advocate and borough presidents, would see comparable raises.

The legislation would be introduced this week and is expected to be heard by the end of the year, which would allow the next city council to vote in January for faster approval. Council members last received a raise in 2016.

Interestingly, it was Mamdani who built a platform centered on affordability for working-class New Yorkers.

The 34-year-old of Ugandan descent promised free buses, rent freezes on rent-stabilized apartments, universal child care and city-run grocery stores during his campaign for New York City mayor.

He also campaigned for a gradual increase in the minimum wage to $30 an hour by 2030.

Mamdani said the proposals would be financed primarily by higher taxes on wealthy individuals and large businesses.

As a member of the State Assembly in 2022, Mamdani also voted for a pay raise for state legislators.

New York City’s latest wage increase plans were originally intended for Mayor Eric Adams’ office, but that timeline was shelved, according to the Post.

“If we have a hearing on the bill this year, we won’t need it next year. That’s a prior question,” Williams told the Post.

When asked by the outlet if the council would pass the wage increase bill in January, Williams responded, “That’s the goal.”

A source also said that the salary increase legislation puts Mamdani in a difficult situation. He could veto the bill or approve legislation “making New York more affordable for the political class,” the source said.

Fox News Digital has contacted Zohran Mamdani for comment.
