After a two -week snapping, many Democrats in Texas returned to the State Capitol on Monday, allowing the Texas Republicans to advance redistribution plans. The representative of the Democratic State, Mihaela Plesa, said that their efforts began a “national movement”, but she is ready to plead in the event of a legal file that the Republicans redressing the cards are “racial cards Gerrymandered”.

“We had to go home for the legal battle,” said Plesa Morning edition. “Our electoral experts have told us that we too were in tight deadlines to make sure that these cards go to the courts and that they are argued.”

Plesa says she has confidence in the courts, especially after the fifth court of American Appeals governed last week that the legislative cards of the State violate article 2 of the law on voting rights of 1965.

When President Trump asked the Texas Republicans to draw five other seats at the Congress to give the GOP an advantage in the elections of next year, he began a national rediscovering war. In at least seven other states, Democrats and Republicans have said they are ready to redraw political lines in the fight against the American house.

Until now, California is the only other state to take important measures to a redistribution in mid-December. Friday, California has unveiled a new Congress card This would give Democrats up to five new seats in the United States.

Plesa supports California’s decision, saying that Democrats must “fight fire with fire”.

“We have always respected the rules. I think our fear is that Donald Trump does not conclude any rule. And our concern is that if he is able to succeed in this takeover, we will see more big bills,” said Plesa.

The Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, has already called for a second special session, which started last Friday. Now that the Democrats are back in session, the redistribution cards proposed by the Republicans should pass.

Leila Fadel and Plesa of NPR discussed what the Democrats have accomplished by breaking the quorum and what they plan to do in the redistribution battle.

The following interview was modified for duration and clarity.

Strengths of the interview

Leila Fadel: So the ranging is finished, but the reason for this disengagement is not. The Republicans always plan to vote to redraw the Congress cards in their favor. So, what did this scraper really accomplish?

Texas State Rep. Mihaela Plesa: Well, this disengagement has accomplished two things, right? First of all, we were victorious to be able to kill the first special session called that the governor called that we saw was really just focused on the power seizures that Donald Trump asked our governor. And the second is that we really started a national movement. We woke up people at the height of what is going on, not only in Texas, but in our country. And we involve people. Really, it’s their representation that is at stake. And so I’m really proud to have met this moment and started this movement.

Fadel: All right. Thus, national attention was something that has been acquired, but the proposed redistribution is still on the table and should pass. What do the Democrats of Texas predict to do next?

Plesa: Well, we had to go home for the legal battle. Our election experts told us that we too are in tight maturity to ensure that these cards go to the courts and that they are pleaded. We feel very confident after we have just seen the fifth circuit court in Louisiana against a redistribution card of Louisiana which was racly Gerrymandered. And so we have to go back to the house. We must make legal arguments on the ground of the House during the legislative debate on the reasons why these are racially gerrymandered cards. And we hope that when he goes to the fifth circuit courtyard, they also find in favor that these cards were racly Gerrymanderd and will stop this takeover.

Fadel: I wanted to ask you questions about California. Democrats move to redraw the Congress cards in response to what is happening in your state, essentially reflecting efforts to give Democrats more seats in California if Texas does what it does. What do you do with that?

Plesa: Well, I think the Democrats must meet fire with fire. If the Republicans choose to change the rules in the middle of the game, the Democrats must be ready to play the new game. Listen, we have always been for independent redistribution commissions. Whenever we see the Democrats taking the hammer or taking a governor, they move to make our cards more correct. Whether it is to include independent redistribution committees in state constitutions as California does, or that they make the system more difficult to change these cards as New York has done. And so we have always respected the rules. I think our fear is that Donald Trump does not conclude any rule. And our concern is that if he is able to succeed in this takeover, we will see more big bills. We will see more cuts in Medicaid and Medicare. We will see, you know, social security being deleted. And we could even see national abortion bans.
