A color e-reader is a delight. Your digital library on a device like the Colorsoft Kindle becomes almost as colorful as the ones you have at home, and browsing a sea of new titles on the store side becomes much more engaging than a sea of black and white. This is a great buy if you read books that might have illustrations on the pages or if you like highlights of color.

Amazon finally released color Kindles starting last year, but with the price nearing $300, we weren’t as impressed as we should have been. But right now, during Black Friday, you can get the colorful Kindle Colorsoft for almost as cheap as the black and white Kindle Paperwhite. While there are a ton of Kindle deals you can shop right now, this one is by far the biggest one that you shouldn’t miss.

Kindle Colorsoft and Colorsoft Signature Edition

There are two versions of the Colorsoft: the base model released this summer and the Signature model released last year. Both are on sale now. Both performed equally well in our testing (although the Signature was the one that had issues with yellow bars appearing at the bottom of devices last year) and are mostly similar, but have a few key differences. The Signature Edition has an auto-adjusting warm light, while the base Colorsoft has a warm light that you can adjust manually. You’ll also get twice the storage on the Signature, with 32GB over 16GB, and the Signature can be charged wirelessly.

Apart from these three features, both have the same 7-inch screen and a resolution of 300 pixels per inch (or ppi) for black and white content and 150 ppi for color. They are also both waterproof. My only complaint is that dark mode no longer darkens menu pages and doesn’t work on downloaded content like AZW3 documents (which are a special e-book style formatted specifically for Kindles).

Overall, it’s a great e-reader, just expensive, especially since you don’t get things like page-turning buttons or the ability to act as a digital notepad like you can with Kobo’s colorful e-readers. If you’re a Kindle enthusiast, now is definitely the best time to buy.
