The Bixie Is Back, and It’s the Coolest Short Hairstyle for Fall 2025

Just when I thought we understood all the hairstyle trends 2025, a familiar look a few decades ago is to throw a key into things: Bixie. Although I do not honestly remember that it was recalled this in the 90s – and I remember almost all the great portans I met in my lifetime – Bixie is back, and it is ready to delight, dazzle and potentially confuse.

The bixie is called The Bixie because it combines elements of two distinctly recognizable hairstyles – the Bob and the Lutin – and creates a new hairstyle in a gray area (but very cute). “A bixie cup is a cutting of elf in equal parts and a bob,” explains the stylist Andrew Fitzsimons. “It is a hirsuting bob with a mixture of layers, to add the dimension and the texture.”

Think of the influx of short haircuts from the middle at the end of the 90s, those which were not reframed enough to be called pixies but which were not long enough to be considered as bobs. (At the time, I think we have just called the “short hair” looks …?) So many stars do it: Winona Ryder, Meg Ryan, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cameron Diaz, Halle Berry, Rachael Leigh Cook, Neve Campbell, Drew Barrymore, and the Australian Opera Star, which has become my own academic culture, Imbruglia.

It was an undeniably adorable look which finally fell into disgrace; My theory is that it went from an carefree look to a more strongly stylish and extremely angular look which was rather cool when Victoria Beckham did it, then a little less when Kate Gosselin did. (Is there a more indelible haircut associated with the expression “I need to speak to your manager”?) But a new wave of celebrities brings this original atmosphere of Bob-Meet-Pixie, and with it, an inevitability: we are all going to receive Bixies in 2025.

We can credit Emma Stone for bringing a new life to this return look. At the first of his new film Eddington In June 2025, the actor put a modern turn on the look with a lot of texture and diapers.
