During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) said Democrats “are responsible for the shutdown,” which he called a “failure.”

Host Jake Tapper said: “So, as you know, 42 million Americans, including 2 million Pennsylvanians, will not receive food stamps or SNAP benefits this month because funding officially expired yesterday. The White House says it’s Democrats’ fault for shutting down the government. Democrats note that the Trump administration is not dipping into contingency funds for SNAP, and they believe Trump is doing this to pressure on the Democrats. How do you see it? Who do you blame for this?

Fetterman said, “Well, I mean, for me, basically, it’s deeply, deeply painful for me to know that 42 million Americans are going to lose their SNAP benefits. And now, that’s one of the main reasons why I refuse to shut down our government. And again, I feel like the Democrats really need to take ownership of the shutdown. I mean, we’re shutting it down. I know why they’re claiming, because they want to address the tax credits, and I fully support that. I voted for all of their CRs, our CRs, every time. And I refuse to put 42 million Americans in a situation of food insecurity. Now this is all solved by just reopening our government and people are now getting paid.

He added: “It’s an absolute failure. It’s actually an embarrassing honesty if we can’t even keep the lights on.”
