Real Madrid face Benfica in midweek and will look to build on their existing 1-0 lead to knock the Portuguese side out of the competition.

The second leg will take place at the Santiago Bernabeu and will not be easy, especially since the same opposition scored four goals against Real Madrid not long ago. This time, however, they will be without José Mourinho, who was sent off for protest in the first leg.

The Special One’s return to the club where he wrote history will therefore not be complete this time. His name has been linked with a potential return to a managerial role at the club, but Diario AS clarifies that this is no longer being considered by the club.

Mourinho will no longer coach Real Madrid

Real Madrid have a history of giving successful managers a second chance at the club, as they did with Zinedine Zidane and Carlo Ancelotti.

Despite uncertainty over the managerial position for next season, Mourinho would not be considered an option.

While it may seem that the events of the first leg of the UEFA Champions League qualifiers and Mourinho’s post-match comments may be behind the fallout, the Spanish outlet confirms that the club ruled him out as an option several weeks ago.

As things stand, they are not ruling out securing Alvaro Arbeloa’s continuity beyond this season, but a lot will depend on whether or not the team wins silverware.

They are also attentive to other options available on the market, but the Portuguese coach is not one of them.
