Andrew Luck is back in football after a long hiatus — and so is his online alter ego

Two words, the majority of chronically online sports fans instantly recognize: “Dear mother”.
The sentence comes from a Twitter parody account from 2015 to 2019 and wrote in the style of the letters of a Union soldier at the time of the civil war, Captain Andrew Luck delighted his subscribers on social networks with updates of his battles and packages of care that he had received with articles such as dried mice and the tail of Castor Sugared.
The real Andrew Luck started in the quarter-back for the Indianapolis colts for two seasons during this period, winning the return player of the year in 2018.
But when Luck announced his NFL retirement in August 2019, the page – @captandrewluck – also retired, with farewell words that included this line: “I made the decision to study my handgun.”
However, the “dear mother” sentence remained forever sealed in the online sports tradition.
“It was sad,” said the author of the Captain Chance at ESPN. “But I felt like there was a closure and it was really useful to continue.”
In November 2024, when Cardinal Stanford hired the chance as a football director of football to supervise the entire program, the old quarterrier was back in the game – with a row promotion. Captain No More, Luck was up to the general.
The owner of account X immediately thought of resurfaced the page.
“When the news came, that’s how I discovered, passed my crazy phone,” said the account owner, who asked to remain anonymous and is only identified as a journalist on the west coast. “And the fans hit me and being like” Oh my God, Oh my God, Oh my God, you can bring him back now. “So yes, of course, I wanted it.”
Quickly, the account published on X about his return, and one of the favorite fictitious heroes of social media was back. The account now has a little less than 500,000 subscribers.
Most expensive mother –
The battlefield called for my glorious return. I am delighted to say that I want to listen to this call.I rearned on myself.
While my handgun is constantly studied permanently – I will help form other young men to be large soldiers. Please send squirrel oil treatments …

The page was launched in December 2015 with this biography: “Soldier. Colt. Simple man.” Since then, “Tactician Cardinal”. was added in front of Colt to reflect Luck’s current role. The creator fell on memes representing NFL players in different periods, which inspired the beginnings of the page.
“I thought it was hilarious, and I am passionate about history and I always liked the Ken Burns civil war series,” said the author. “And I thought it would be a fun thing to do, to talk about football through this type of voice.”
The author started using the tone with friends on text messages, sending simulated letters before the games. A friend recommended starting a Twitter account, appreciating humor and thinking that others could also “kick it”.
People have done more than kick, and the number of page followers has exceeded 43,000 by December 2016. Actor Rob Lowe mentioned it several times. The bettor of Colts Pat McAfee said that some of the messages were “quite funny”.
A voice in the creator’s mind served as Captain Luck, speaking of football from a unique perspective. The development of the character and the precision of his language over the years have been helped by the creator with a minor in history.
Apart from seeing which game – or battle, in this case – is the next one, there is no research involved. Not even for the delicious care articles on the theme of the Roadkills ranging from spicy raccoon calves to the thighs of floury hedgehog. Squirrel oil is a basic food.
But these virtual care packages are not opened when luck has announced its retirement. The owner of the account told ESPN that over the years there had been several offers for the page.
“Obviously, I did not sell [the page] Because I don’t want to. I really like to do it and I worry about what it could become. But I was ready to finish, “said the author.” I made a last farewell tweet that I honestly thought it was quite beautiful. “”
Therefore, while luck retired, his captain too. Messages on X sometimes appeared, but only when luck was in the news.
In May 2023, John Keim of ESPN wrote that Washington Commanders phoned the chance in the previous off -season on the potentially playing return. Jim Irsay, who owned the colts, responded to the news on X, writing That if an NFL team contacts the luck or any associate to play for its franchise, “it would be a clear violation of the falsification policy of the league”.
The colts and commanders resolved the falsification dispute, and Captain Luck wrote that his beard had been “tapered – but not falsified” and that he would continue to “read birds”.
The owner of the account and luck have never met or interagized. The author said that some people still believed that luck is the one behind the messages. Luck is aware of the captain and expressed his satisfaction.
“This person has a much better sense of humor that I could never have. I think it’s hilarious. I think it’s funny,” said Luck in an interview before the start of Stanford season in August. “I think that an appropriate parody account which remains clean and which has good humor is good for the internet. And I am happy to help it in one way or another.”
Luck’s biggest approval show for the page came in September 2023. He appeared in the post-match set of a “Thursday evening football” match disguised as a Captain of the Union, a hat with width and everything. The moment quickly became viral and encouraged another call to return the account.

I hope that my appearance on the magic and moving image box has filled you with joy. As you can see, my resolution has never been so robust. The squirrel oil and your peppery feet kept me robust. Life is splendid. Give the cows of my best. I love you.

“He went bananas. Like bananas, crazy crazy, and it was so cool to see …”, said the author. “People said to me:” Go ahead, bring it back, there must be a way, bring it back. “And, well, you cannot bring it back.
A little more than a year after the appearance of “Thursday evening of football”, the fans returned to the account. With the first season of Stanford with luck as the CEO in progress, the account plans remain the same.
The author will follow a rate as if luck was with the colts. Monday’s messages look at the “battle”. Wednesday is when the “care package” arrives. There will be a reflection after the match.
A few days before playing the cougars byu, Captain Luck explained how he had reached the “Ut-Ahhh country” and would practice “a defense of the leap to fight against these great cats”. The preparations for the Boston College Eagles included the lucky captain who ordered his men to drill when he was covered with feathers. The exercise was obviously cautious. Cardinal won his first game in the age of luck 30-20.
“I just want to keep it fun, and it’s the greatest joy for me, it is that people appreciate it so much, including Andrew,” said the author. “I mean that every time I saw him say that he really appreciates it, I kick it. It’s like the ultimate compliment. And I take this responsibility really seriously.”
Just like the new general of Stanford.
