Tesla discontinuing Model S and Model X to make room for robots

Tesla will discontinue the Model S and Model X in the second quarter of 2026, Elon Musk said during an earnings call with investors today. No advance information was given about the cancellations, which brought an abrupt end to Tesla’s two original flagship electric vehicles.

Musk said the reason for canceling the vehicle programs was to free up space at Tesla’s Fremont factory for the production of its Optimus humanoid robot. It’s the most striking example of Musk’s quest to transform Tesla from an automaker into a leader in AI and robotics.

“It’s time to end the Model S and X programs with an honorable discharge, because we are truly moving toward a future based on autonomy,” he said. “So if you want to buy a Model S and X, now is the time to order it.”
