Bread Delivery Service Wildgrain Is $40 Off Right Now

The croissants of Wildgrain bread delivery service shouldn’t have been this delicious. After all, they had arrived by mail. But nonetheless they were flaky, buttery, classic-tasting pastries with a golden exterior and an airy structure inside, still warm from the oven and delicate enough to crumple with the slightest touch.

If they had been delivered to my plate at a local restaurant, I would have accepted these croissants as freshly baked. And yet, just 20 minutes earlier, these pastries were frozen. Two hours before, they were on a delivery truck heading to my house.
Wildgrain is both a new and old concept: the delivery of fresh bread. It’s a monthly subscription service that delivers a box of sourdough bread and slow-fermented pastries from one of 50 small bakeries nationwide. Products are pre-cooked, frozen, shipped directly to your store and ready to finish cooking at home. In their own way, they’re fresher than you’d even get at a local bakery. Gluten-free and plant-based packages are also available.
The plans aren’t cheap at regular price: $99 per month for a six-item box and $159 per month for a 12-item box. But for now, these delivery boxes are only on sale for the one time this year, according to Wildgrain representatives. Enter promo code WIRED40 and Wildgrain will give you $40 off your first month’s shipping box (for six- and 12-item boxes only). Free croissants or free gluten-free cookies for life are also included with your Wildgrain box, as long as you order before November 23.
How Wildgrain Subscriptions Work
A Wildgrain subscription comes in the form of a monthly box, filled with four, six or 12 items that can range from whole-wheat sourdough bread or fresh pasta to a six-pack of donuts or four large croissants. Basically, you can create your own box each month, choosing from sourdough or healthy doughs and decadent pastries.
Frozen baked goods can be placed in your freezer to be ready when you need them, such as when family comes by for a Sunday evening visit. Baking times vary from five minutes (doughnuts) to 20 minutes (croissants, pumpkin cookies.) Baked goods do not need to be defrosted before baking: you put them in frozen.
The reason this process works is that the bread is largely already baked. Wildgrain contracts with small bakeries, according to company representatives, although their identities are not disclosed.
