Tuscarora, Middletown marching bands earn state championships

The Tuscarora and Middletown high school marching bands have both won state titles.
The National Marching Band Competition was held November 1 at Towson University.
In the open category, Tuscarora scored 94.95 points to secure first place. Thomas S. Wootton High School in Montgomery County scored 94.08 points.
Tuscarora’s group was also recognized for its color guard and musical performance, inspired by the story of Icarus, the Greek mythological figure who flew too close to the sun.
The Middletown group took first place in Division 1A with a score of 87.20. Second-place Boonsboro High School from Washington County scored 86.17 points.
Middletown High was recognized for its color and visual performance for its play inspired by the movie “Top Gun.”
In division 1A, out of 13 schools:
*Walkersville High School, third place, 84.70
* Brunswick High School, 11th place, 76.25
Frederick High School scored 81.86 points and placed seventh out of nine schools in Division 3A.
In the open category, out of nine schools:
* Urbana High School, third place, 92.55
*Governor Thomas Johnson High School, fourth place, 91.75
* Linganore High School, seventh place, 89.53
*Oakdale High School, eighth place, 87.88
Governor Thomas Johnson High was recognized for its percussion section.
